Joe Kerry New is a Native of Northern California who has lived in Oregon for the past 16 years. His songwriting path has traveled through Nashville as a former staff writer for Almo Irving / Down in Dixie Music and as an Indy publisher associated with Bug Music since 1980.

Denny Bixby
Denny Bixby is an artist in the truest sense, in that he is always evolving in the ways of musical expression. Since returning to Portland, Oregon after almost 18 years living in Nashville, Tennessee and playing around the planet with a half-dozen Grammy-winning artists, he is up to his old tricks and then some. In 2010 he was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. He plays in and around the Northwest with rock icons Quarterflash, blues and R&B maven Lloyd Jones, and renowned songwriter Jack McMahon.

John Bunzow
Portland Oregon native John Bunzow’s mix of eclectic musical influences – melding blues, country, rock and even jazz – have helped establish him as an original artist of heartfelt depth, substance and style.
He’s as likely to draw on his love of the music of country legend Merle Haggard or scuffling barroom bard Tom Waits, as he is the smooth R&B and soul of Marvin Gaye, the iconic folk wisdom of Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Ry Cooder or the blues of Albert King.

This is for guitarists that have a bit of experience playing and want to build repertoire and challenge themselves to reinforce the basic chord shapes, understandings of keys (chord families), solidify basic right-hand techniques, and sing while playing. You can play most of the open/first position chords including F and are comfortable playing several songs. You should be familiar with the basic “boom-chuck” or bass note-after strum technique and some basic fingerpicking. We will continue to reinforce those techniques by building our repertoire of songs in a variety of styles. We will review some of the songs that I have taught in the past, and the goal is for each of you to learn new skills and songs each week. Please let me know if you have a song request!

This is a class for folks that are comfortable playing guitar and have all the basic skills from the previous levels and would like to stay in shape, get inspired, and learn new, somewhat challenging material. We will learn beginner to intermediate songs with a variety of techniques such as fingerpicking, fast chord changes, scales, bar chords, tricky rhythms, and lead lines. To serve BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People Of Color) middle and high schoolers by introducing them to Samba drumming with immersion in Brazilian culture with an emphasis on music history, team building, positive self image, confidence, and self improvement! While the emphasis is on reaching BIPOC youth, all are welcome. Parental cooperation is expected (as a learning partner) in developing practice times and rehearsal in the home environment.

If you’ve been playing old-time music on fiddle, clawhammer banjo, or guitar for a while and are ready to build your repertoire while meeting and playing with other people, then this class is for you! We meet for 8 weeks and learn 6 traditional tunes and songs. We start each lesson in a large group and the instructors play the tune we will work on that evening. Then, we slow it down and all sing the melody together to learn it by ear. We separate into different classrooms for group lessons on each instrument. Finally, we come back together and play the tune all together.

On the fourth meeting, we work specifically on reviewing the first three tunes and harmony singing. For the final class meeting, we will meet early for a big community dinner (COVID permitting) and will play all the tunes we have learned during the session. In addition to the class meetings, enrolled students will receive access to source recordings and demonstration videos for each of the tunes we teach.

COVID Policy:
We ask that you are vaccinated and current on your boosters to attend class. We do not require masking, but it is encouraged and welcomed if you feel compromised in any way. Should someone in class have a positive test within three days of class meeting we will notify everyone. We will follow CDC guidelines and will require masking or pivot to Zoom classes should we be required to do so.

Led by Rene Berblinger, Continuing Mandolin will take you to the next level journey, $120 for six classes.

The course will be designed and tailored based upon registrants to make sure you learn what you need in the next step of your journey to master the mandolin. You are welcome to take both the beginning and continuing class or just take one or the other...

Topics may cover and focus on any one of the following topics:

A. Learning to read music notation on the mandolin.
B. Closed position chords and back-up including some basic understanding of chord structures and patterns.
C. More advanced right and left hand techniques.
D. Scale patterns in open and movable positions.
E. Build tune repertoire in various styles including Celtic, traditional American folk and Bach or anything you bring!

Come at 7pm for the zydeco lesson and stay for the dancing, Tuesday nights at Catfish Lou‘s.

Take advantage of the weekly lesson for beginners and then stay for the dance ‘til 9:30. Instructors rotate weekly and each brings their own curated playlist of classic and contemporary zydeco and Cajun music. Zydeco, two-step, waltz, blues, swing.

Tony Becker of San Jose, California and Mark Wallis of Gloucester, England host this trans-atlantic session for all interested parties on Wednesdays, at 8:00 PM UK time. For American visitors, please note we are now all on standard ‘winter‘ time, so that is 3:00 PM Eastern or 12:00 PM Pacific in the USA.

Open to all who play traditional Irish music and It has the obvious limitations of Zoom in that only one musician can play at a time but we go round the ‘room’ and take it in turns - no pressure though and the baton can be passed if you just want to listen. We just play for a couple of hours.

On a good day we have a variety of instruments from pipes to melodeon, banjo to fiddle and it can be a good way to pick up tunes. It is very friendly and we welcome everyone. The only criterion is we try to stick to Irish traditional.

Arlo Leach‘s Jug Band Ensemble
Arlo‘s Jug Band Ensemble class meets on Thursday nights to learn traditional jug band instrumentation and repertoire. Their set will highlight some songs they learned during the most recent six-week session.

We love sharing traditional music with the world! Check out local and traveling musicians playing old time American music. Improv jamming and renditions of customary favorites enliven the Hostel Cafe from 7-10pm every Thursday. All are welcome! We will to continue to build up our basic guitar playing skills through familiar songs. In addition to reviewing and learning new open position chord shapes, we will work on rhythmic competence, strumming techniques, singing while playing, basic finger picking, simple melodies, and basic music theory. All that sounds a bit fancy, but my goal is to help you develop your musicality and confidence playing songs you enjoy. We will do lots of review and will learn new songs and skills each week.

Arietta’s masterclass focuses on the art of vocal improvisation, $25 for adults/$13 for kids under 18. From the iconic jazz greats to the more modern hip-hop freestyle lyricists, improvisation is a form of freedom like none other. Arietta will speak about, demonstrate, and share techniques that will help open your mind; your improvisational faucet to help you find your vocal freedom.

We open up a "room" on Zoom at 6 pm Pacific Time every Saturday evening. We start singing at 6:30 pm and we keep it going until the last person leaves.
