On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

NOTE: No session on Jun 7 (Sun) to make space for the Community Gathering.

COVID Policy:
Please be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 if you are joining this session — that is a request, not a requirement.

We believe great things happen when we play tunes together! People connect with each other and make friends, and we keep our music traditions alive by sharing tunes and passing them on. What’s more, playing tunes can make you feel happy, and if you do it often enough, you’ll notice that you are getting better at playing your instrument too!

It turns out that you don’t even have to be in the same place…great things still happen when we play music together, online from the comfort of your own home.

Phoenix Folk Ltd exists to promote participation and performance in folk and acoustic music, song and dance across the North East of England. We aim to be a friendly face of folk music, to help keep alive the great traditions of folk music and to encourage talent and personal musical development.

Everyone is muted, which means that you hear your own instrument, completing a trio with our fiddle and guitar. You can play the tune, or try some harmony!

Doors Open: 6:00 PM Eliza Gilkyson, accompanied by the musical genius of Nina Gerber, returns to the Alberta Rose for an evening of music in support of her latest release Dark Ages, $37 advance (doors open 6 pm). Minors OK with parent/guardian. Eliza is a twice Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and activist who is one of the most respected musicians in folk, roots, and Americana circles. Her songs have been covered by Joan Baez, Bob Geldof, Chris Smither, the world-renowned Conspirare Choir, Tom Rush, and Rosanne Cash and have appeared in films, PBS specials, and on primetime TV. Nina has been an undeniable staple of the West Coast acoustic music scene since the late 70‘s. From the first time she heard Kate Wolf perform in a local pizza shop, the budding teenage guitarist single-mindedly dedicated herself to her instrument. Within a few years, she had won Wolf‘s respect and a place as her principal musical collaborator. From there, she built a career as a sought-after teacher, arranger, producer, and prolific accompanist to a veritable who‘s who of folk music royalty.

With the return of good weather, the outdoor tune session resumes Thursday afternoons in the Butterfly Garden in Cook Park, Tigard, Oregon.

Let’s get together to play some tunes outside!

This is a weekly event in the good-weather months. Slow session, with plenty of room to split off a faster session. This is a repeating event, weather permitting — check Event News for changes.

The Butterfly Garden in Cook Park, Tigard, has wide open space where we can gather in shade, sunshine, or shelter.

Bring a chair and an instrument. The park is a great place to take a walk or have a picnic before or after the session. If you come with companions, there is plenty of room for them to roam among the trees and trails and by the river if they want a break from the tune playing.

Where we are gathering: as you enter the park via SW 92nd Ave, turn left at the open gate and head toward Shelter 4 (the park’s website has a map). We’ll gather on the lawn near Shelter 4, at the entrance to the Butterfly Garden. We’ll pick a shady spot if it’s a warm day, or grab a sunny spot if it’s a cool day. If it’s rainy we’ll get under the roof of Shelter 4.

Sweeten The Third is Afton Coombs (dance, voice) / Cameron DeWhitt (banjo, voice), Sweeten the Third is a new collaboration between banjoist Cameron DeWhitt (they/them) and percussive dancer Afton Coombs (they/them). They play, dance, and sing traditional American string band music utilizing two of its most archaic techniques, clawhammer and flatfooting, while stretching and breaking the genre’s boundaries and semiotics in ways that only two trans folk mover-musicians can. Cameron DeWhitt is a clawhammer banjoist, Old Time musician, and drag performer from Portland, Oregon. In addition to Sweeten the Third, they play banjo and sing in Tall Poppy String Band and perform as Doreen Ditties in their drag act and old time quintet tradwife. When they’re not performing, podcasting, teaching, or playing music for pleasure, they’re usually at home cooking for their family, roasting coffee, and reading Marxist theory. Afton Coombs is a dancer, singer, flute player, and technical worker based in Los Angeles, California. As a dancer, their background is in tap, flatfoot, and house, and they perform as a duo with Sweeten the Third, locally in Los Angeles with Irish trad band The Praties, and on occasion with Santa Barabara-based bluegrass quartet The Honeysuckle Possums. Get ready to strum, sing, and jam with Avery Hill at the Ukulele Jam - it‘s going to be a musical blast!

Ukulele players (and supporting instruments) of all levels are welcome to join us at our jams. It’s a great opportunity to practice informally, take some risks, and enjoy the community.

This mixed-level jam is best suited for ukulele players who are already comfortable playing in the Key of C and are looking to expand their repertoires. We play songs that pull from a variety of genres, songwriters, and musical traditions, from folk favorites by The Carter Family to an ‘ukulele adaptation of “The Wind Cries Mary”, by Jimi Hendrix.

Our jams are led by Avery Hill, a staple instructor here in Portland for over 10 years and a regular at ‘ukulele camps around the region. "I take great joy in meeting everyone where they are in their musical journey," she says. "I encourage participants at each jam to find the challenge(s) that feel right for them, and not worry about what feels out of reach. There’s something to learn from every song and I do my best to help everyone find their connection point to the songs we play."

Jams are free, but if you are able to make a donation, it is gratefully accepted, so we can keep this jam going. Songbooks are provided. For a preview or to download / print ahead of time, join Avery‘s newsletter.

Having met while waiting tables in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, their sound is straightforward yet powerful—rooted in tight vocal interplay and finely picked acoustic instruments. Inspired by the everyday, their songs explore life lessons, the quiet hustle of ordinary life, and the dogged optimism that drives it all.

Doors: 6:30 pm Show: 7:30 pm Virtuoso, songwriter, singer and theater producer, Taimane, has established herself as one of the leading ukulele players in the world, known for her fierce and inventive style of play, (doors open at 6:30 pm), advance $37/preferred $58.75. Minors OK when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Taimane’s musicality and approach to the stage further add to her draw. Through both beautiful originals and one-of-a-kind mashups – seemingly disparate songs (e.g. Led Zeppelin and Beethoven) merged into medleys with pop appeal – Taimane conjures a wide-range of deep emotions smashing the notion that Hawai‘ian music is light and simple. Seeing her perform live exponentially amplifies these feelings and makes clear that Taimane is an entertainer first and foremost. Hailing from a musical Polynesian family including her late mother, Palepa Tauiliili Gardner (Miss Samoa 1978). By age 10, she regularly performed in public, busking in Waikiki every Friday night. By age 13, Taimane landed a position in Don Ho’s show. Each night, when the typically full house turned its attention to the petite young girl suddenly anointed band leader for a rendition of the surf classic “Wipeout,” it was time to rock. Following her early years in Waikiki, Taimane walked away from its pop scene and leapt into a completely different world, the art houses of Honolulu’s Chinatown. There, she discovered audiences who valued original songs and began to develop her own style of music, Fast forward to today, and you have an artist who tours the world shining bright like a diamond (the Samoan translation of her name) renowned for taking the ukulele to new heights while blazing her own trail in the process.
