On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

COVID Policy:
Please be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 if you are joining this session — that is a request, not a requirement.

We believe great things happen when we play tunes together! People connect with each other and make friends, and we keep our music traditions alive by sharing tunes and passing them on. It turns out that you don’t even have to be in the same place…great things still happen when we play music together, online from the comfort of your own home.

Self-described “jamgrass” veterans The Infamous Stringdusters return, this time joined by transcendent Americana artist Molly Tuttle and her bluegrass band Golden Highway! A pair of GRAMMY-winning acts team up for two nights — don’t miss this one, $40, 21+ floor (standing room only)/balcony (seated) all ages (doors open at 6 pm).

The Infamous Stringdusters

After finally being in the same room for the first time in six months, the Infamous Stringdusters seized the moment for their revealing new album, Toward the Fray. Released on their own label, Americana Vibes, the collection also firmly establishes the band‘s stature on the modern acoustic music landscape, where they‘ve built a solid and enduring fan base among traditional and progressive audiences alike, $40.

The five band members — Travis Book (bass), Andy Falco (guitar), Jeremy Garrett (fiddle), Andy Hall (Dobro), and Chris Pandolfi (banjo) — wrote the songs on Toward the Fray separately, sending simple phone demos to each other during lockdown. Fueled by friendship and a mastery of their instruments, the 13-track collection feels live, but not necessarily loose, due to a synergy that‘s developed over the last 16 years of playing sheds, clubs, and festival stages across the country.

Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway

On her new album, City of Gold, Molly Tuttle, joined by her band Golden Highway, shares a batch of spellbinding stories that span time and place: wildly colorful fables populated by gold miners and fortune tellers, true-to-life tales of love and loss and a fast-changing world, and a reimagining of Alice in Wonderland set in the backwoods of Kentucky, to name just a few.

Tony Becker of San Jose, California and Mark Wallis of Gloucester, England host this Transatlantic session for all interested parties on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM UK time. For American visitors, please note we are now all on standard ‘winter‘ time, so that is 12:00 PM Pacific in the USA.

Open to all who play traditional Irish music and It has the obvious limitations of Zoom in that only one musician can play at a time. But we go round the ‘room’ and take it in turns - no pressure though and the baton can be passed if you just want to listen. We just play for a couple of hours.

On a good day we have a variety of instruments from pipes to Melodeon, banjo to fiddle and it can be a good way to pick up tunes. It is very friendly and we welcome everyone. The only criterion is we try to stick to Irish traditional.

With the return of good weather, the outdoor tune session resumes Thursday afternoons in the Butterfly Garden in Cook Park, Tigard, Oregon.

Let’s get together to play some tunes outside!

This is a weekly event in the good-weather months. The Butterfly Garden in Cook Park, Tigard, has wide open space where we can gather in shade, sunshine, or shelter.

Bring a chair and an instrument. The park is a great place to take a walk or have a picnic before or after the session. If you come with companions, there is plenty of room for them to roam among the trees and trails and by the river if they want a break from the tune playing.

Where we are gathering: as you enter the park via SW 92nd Ave, turn left at the open gate and head toward Shelter 4 (the park’s website has a map). We’ll gather on the lawn near Shelter 4, at the entrance to the Butterfly Garden. We’ll pick a shady spot if it’s a warm day, or grab a sunny spot if it’s a cool day. If it’s rainy we’ll get under the roof of Shelter 4.

Ukulele Summer Jam Series led by Avery Hill for Artichoke Community Music School at an off site location, $25 drop-in per session.

It‘s that time of year to gather outside and jam! Each week, we’ll circle up outdoors and play simple, 3- and 4-chord songs together, *without music*. Come at 6 pm with a beverage or finger food to share (optional), play at 6:30 pm. Each jam will feature songs from a different genre / theme:

August 1 - Cowpoke Songs
August 8 - The Blues

I know playing music off the paper feels most accessible to most folks. But when you take that visual stimulation away, you are allowing your ears to open up and your fingers to come alive, as these other senses start to compensate appropriately. Teaching and coaching folks on learning music by ear is one of my specialties, so I will be there for you every step of the way! Imagine yourself looking up and around and smiling at your fellow music makers! This is how music should be made :)

Each jam in this ‘Ukulele Jam Summer Series is a mixed-level jam for ‘ukulele players of various learning styles and experience. I recommend it for players who are comfortable with:

playing songs in the key of C, and ready to integrate new keys into their repertoire
a basic strum pattern or two
taking risks to learning new things

Everybody loves seeing a jug band, but there’s often more to this fun music than meets the eye. In this class we’ll dig into original jug band recordings from the 1920s-30s, learn about the artists who created them and practice building arrangements that reflect their unique style.

Players of all skill levels will have a role in our arrangements. If you already play a standard instrument like guitar, mandolin or harmonica, or a homemade instrument like jug, washboard or washtub bass, please bring it. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn a homemade instrument if you like. Depending on how the class goes, we might conclude with a performance of some kind.
